Agile Project Management

[ when is it wise to be agile? ]

How does one actually implement agile project management practices? Is it possible to combine agile with traditional project management practices, and how can we as an organization know what suits us the best? A lot of questions and often a feeling of uncertainty of what will be of the greatest benefit to the organization along with how one can reach more agility within the organization. There is a often a misperception that increased agility within an organization means that there is less need for control – while in reality it’s more about the way one handles control.

For instance, when is it worth having certain information accessible and when is it not? Should you strive for being an agile organization or one simply apply agile ways of working? There is a huge difference between being an agile organization and applying certain agile principles, and as such it’s important to not only think about how you want to work but also review how you want to check up on each other’s work.

Applying agile principles of working entail the organization to work more flexibly as well as postponing taking decisions to a late as possibly acceptable point in the project. For instance, it can be useful to work agile when the end product is uncertain and it’s of use for the organization to be more flexible in their working ways in order to allow for more changes.

Agile transformation

So when are agile principles most useful and how should a potential transition from waterfall- to agile project management be handled?

Along with the organization’s own needs, it is reasonable to explore when or in which phases of its projects working agile would be profitable – a majority of organizations take on a hybrid approach which allows them to choose when to implement agile principles in parts of their projects.

At Arkatay we are used to consult in these types of solutions and help organizations get an overview of both traditional as well as agile principles – assisting them in picking out the parts most suitable for their organization
